Education is a Ponzi Scheme

Our education system is a massive Ponzi scheme. I may come across as a cynic for making this statement, and I may earn the ire of many, but bear with me for a moment. This is not a bad thing—in fact, it may be the only viable way to pass knowledge from one generation to the next.

Office Decoration

Looking into my office from the outside.

My office is housed in the Davidson Math and Science Building at UNR. The building is relatively new, and has some design quirks, some of which are a bit annoying. For instance, next to the doorway of each office, there is a window that goes from the floor to the height of the door. This means that, without some kind of barricade, students are wont to stare into my office and pester me, even when the door is closed, clearly signifying that I wish to be left alone.

Still Alive!

Man… between my course load, my teaching load, and a four month old, I have been rather remiss in keeping this place up to date. C’est la vie, I suppose. At any rate, spring break is next week, and I have a couple of little rants that I might get around to. Until then, today is π day, which seems an appropriate moment to once again point out that π is wrong.

Spider’s Web

My wife is an editor for the literary site Indie Ink. The goal of the site is to foster creativity in a non-judgemental and non-competitive manner. One way in which they do this is through a weekly writing challenge, where authors write in response to prompts given by other authors. Every once in a while, when I have some free time, I sign up to play. This happens to be one of those weeks.

The Collatz Fractal

In the past, we have spent a significant amount of time discussing the Mandelbrot set and variations thereon. We saw that each Mandelbrot, multibrot, and Julia set can be characterized as a set of complex numbers that behave “nicely” with respect to a function of the form \(f(z) = z^e + K\), where the choice of \(K\) gives us either a multibrot or Julia fractal. These functions are only a very small subset of all possible complex valued functions, and there are many interesting fractals that can be rendered by examining the behaviour of other kinds of functions. In this post, we will examine a function with a relationship to an open problem in number theory called the Collatz conjecture.

Sudoku

I don’t know a lot about the game Sudoku—I haven’t played that may squares, nor have I ever gotten really into the mathematical study of the game. However, I can certainly understand the attraction: there are a large number of interesting questions that can be asked about Sudoku that are easily stated, but require some pretty nifty mathematics to come to terms with.

A Typical Morning

Seven weeks ago, my wife Wendryn and I brought home our daughter, Katja, from the hospital. Since Katja was born, Wendryn has been going to work in the morning, and I have been going to work in the afternoon. Every once in a while, I try to get some work done while I am at home in the morning. It typically doesn’t go that well.
