A nebulabrot rendering of the function
\[
z_n = \frac{1}{z^2} + c.
\]
When I started combining the three layers that compose this image, I noticed that the “lowest energy” level (orbits were only exposed if the particle escaped in fewer than 10 iterations) had the look of water droplets on a lens. The final composition is meant to reflect that initial observation.
Oh! And for those keeping score at home, this image consists of approximately 1.125 billion exposures, and took about three days to render. I am fairly certain that I could speed up rendering times by implementing Horner’s algorithm in the routine that evaluates polynomials, but the entire program needs some work, so I haven’t bothered, yet.
