It has been raining here for the last two days. Given that we live in a desert, the rain is quite welcome. It is, however, a bit surprising. In most years, we get a couple of big storms in May, followed rapidly by a summer that lasts from June through August. This year, the weather has been exceedingly mild—May was cool and dry, and the last week has been pleasantly wet.
The weather has created a wonderful array of colors, which are bright and vibrant outside of my office window. The sky is a fairly uniform, but bright, grey, which serves as background for a range of green trees and brown earth. This palette serves as inspiration for today’s image of the Mandelbrot set.
The image is centered near \(-0.101+0.925i\), which puts it on the northern periphery of the set. The zoom level is less than I have used in recent weeks, though the scale is still moderately impressive: assuming that the entire Mandelbrot set is about 3 miles across, the above image covers an area that is about 3/8ths of an inch across, and a bit more than half an inch tall.
