The image above is centered along the negative real axis in the complex plane. In the larger image from which this was taken, the real axis is surrounded by a linear yellow feature. Both images are relatively close to the edge of the Mandelbrot set, where the orbits of points tend to escape fairly quickly, giving large regions of red. However, near the actual boundary of the set, it takes longer and longer for orbits to escape, giving the brighter yellow areas.
